E-2 Foreign-Language Instructor Visa
Korea’s E-2 visa is for eligible foreign-language instructors working at permitted schools and language-education institutions. A teaching job title alone is not enough: the applicant, the teaching activity and the employer must all fit the E-2 rules.
This guide explains the main eligibility routes, documents and application sequence. It also separates the standard route from special programs and treaty-based exceptions that are often incorrectly presented as one rule.

1. What does the E-2 visa cover?
E-2 status covers conversational instruction in a foreign language at an institution allowed under the immigration rules. The official description focuses on teaching practical communication skills in the instructor’s eligible language.
A university lecture, subject teaching, translation, curriculum work or a job that only happens to use English may fall under a different status or require a separate review. Check the actual duties in the contract, not only the job title.
2. Who may qualify for an E-2 visa?
The standard foreign-language instructor route
The main route generally requires the applicant to be a citizen of a country where the language being taught is a native language and to hold the required university degree. The manual also contains a separate domestic-university exception for some applicants who completed their education in Korea. The exact evidence depends on the route used.
English public-school programs
For the public-school English program route described in the manual, the standard English-language country group is the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Education-authority recruitment rules can add program-specific screening beyond the immigration minimum.
India and other special routes
Indian citizens are addressed through a separate Korea–India CEPA route for eligible English instruction; it should not be described as simply adding an eighth country to every E-2 program. The manual also describes conditional routes involving a Korean citizen’s foreign spouse and instruction in certain languages other than English, Chinese or Japanese. Each route has its own evidence and institutional conditions.
3. Which employers can sponsor E-2 instructors?
Permitted settings described in the official manual include qualifying foreign-language academies, schools and educational institutions, workplace language-training facilities, lifelong-education facilities and certain other registered language-education organizations. Public-school programs are handled through the relevant education authority.
Before accepting an offer, ask the employer which E-2 category and sponsoring entity will appear in the application. A recruitment platform or academy brand is not proof that the actual contracting entity can sponsor the visa.

The exact checklist varies by application route and reviewing office. The following groups reflect the principal evidence in the official manual.

5. How the E-2 application process works
- Confirm the correct visa route.
Match your nationality, degree, language, job duties and employer to the standard or applicable special E-2 route. - Review the contract and sponsor.
Check the contracting entity, workplace, teaching duties, pay and working conditions before providing original documents. - Prepare authenticated applicant documents.
Follow the checklist from the consulate, education authority or immigration office handling the case. - The sponsor completes the Korea-side procedure.
Many first-time cases use a visa issuance confirmation process in Korea before the applicant applies at the Korean mission abroad. The exact channel depends on the case. - Apply for the visa and check the decision.

6. Salary, minimum wage and GNI references
The ordinary E-2 contract must comply with the applicable employment and immigration requirements. The manual links the ordinary salary floor to Korea’s current minimum-wage framework, while a narrow special language-instructor route uses a separate GNI-related test with an institutional exception.

Housing, airfare, severance, insurance and paid leave depend on the contract and applicable labor law. Do not assume that every E-2 job includes the same benefits.
7. Renewal and changing employers
An E-2 holder should not begin work for a new employer, add a workplace or change duties based only on a private agreement. The required immigration procedure depends on what is changing and when. Check the current Hi Korea guidance or call 1345 before the change takes effect.
For renewal, prepare early enough for the employer and school to issue current documents. Approval and the period granted depend on the contract, employer eligibility, immigration record and the evidence submitted.
Frequently asked questions
Is the E-2 visa only for citizens of seven English-speaking countries?
The familiar seven-country list applies to the standard English public-school route described in the manual. E-2 also covers other languages and has separate conditional routes. India is addressed through a separate CEPA route rather than a blanket eighth-country rule for every program.
Can a non-native English speaker get an E-2 visa?
Do not assume that English fluency alone is enough. Eligibility depends on the precise nationality, language, education, institution and special-route rules. Ask the sponsor to identify the official route it intends to use.
Is the TaLK program currently open?
The visa manual still mentions TaLK as a program category, but that reference does not prove that recruitment is currently open. Confirm current program operation with the responsible education authority.
Can I apply for E-2 from outside Korea?
Many first-time applicants complete a sponsor-led issuance-confirmation step in Korea and then apply through a Korean mission abroad. Follow the mission and sponsor instructions for your actual case.
How long does E-2 processing take?
There is no reliable single processing time for every office and application. Timing can change with the consulate or immigration office, season, document verification and requests for additional evidence.
