Choose TOPIK when you need a general Korean-language score for education, an ordinary job application or a visa route that specifically recognizes TOPIK.
Choose EPS-TOPIK only when you are applying through an official Employment Permit System recruitment route. It is not a substitute for general TOPIK, and passing it does not guarantee a job, contract or E-9 visa.
The names look similar, but the tests answer different questions. TOPIK asks, “How well can you use Korean?” EPS-TOPIK asks whether a candidate meets the Korean-language selection stage for a particular EPS employment process.

What is general TOPIK used for?
NIIED describes TOPIK as a test that measures Korean ability for non-native speakers and overseas Koreans. Its results can be used for admission to Korean educational institutions and job seeking.
The receiving institution still controls the requirement. A university, employer or immigration route decides whether it accepts TOPIK and which level or format it needs. A score is evidence of language ability, not a universal approval ticket.

What does EPS-TOPIK do?
HRD Korea says EPS-TOPIK evaluates basic daily communication, Korean needed in industry and understanding of Korean workplace culture. It can be used as an objective selection criterion for an official foreign job-seeker list.
The key word is selection. EPS-TOPIK is one stage in a government-managed employment route. A country round may also require skills testing, health screening, documents and other assessments.
Why are both tests attracting attention in Vietnam?
Vietnam currently shows two different kinds of Korean-language demand.
- General TOPIK: YTN reported in May 2026 that about 85,000 people took TOPIK in Vietnam in 2025, connecting growth to education, careers, Korean business activity and wider interest in Korea.
- EPS employment: Vietnam’s Center of Overseas Labor separately announced a 2026 agriculture and fisheries EPS round with 900 final selection places. Stage one was EPS-TOPIK, followed by a mandatory skills test for language-stage passers.
These figures do not describe the same candidate pool. The first concerns general TOPIK; the second concerns one dated EPS round. Applicants in Vietnam should use the official COLAB site for currently open sectors, eligibility and dates.
What happens after you pass EPS-TOPIK?
- Complete the health, skills, document and job-application steps required by the country round.
- Your eligible information may enter the official job-seeker process.
- A Korean employer selects from candidates referred through EPS.
- The standard contract is transmitted and confirmed through the official institutions.
- The E-9 visa and departure process follows after the contract and immigration steps.
