Start with why you are coming to or staying in Korea: a visit, family, study, business, work or an after-arrival procedure. Then check how long you expect to stay and whether you are applying from outside Korea or dealing with status inside Korea.
The same purpose can lead to different routes depending on your nationality, qualifications, family relationship, employer, school, current status and application location. Use this page as a map, not as an approval test.

Visit, tourism, transit or events
This route may fit tourism, visiting friends or relatives, attending a meeting or event, transit, or another temporary non-employment purpose.
Verify: whether you need a visa, the exact short-visit category, permitted activities and the requirements set for your nationality and mission.
Family, dependant or residence
This route may fit joining a spouse or family member, accompanying a principal visa holder, overseas-Korean status, residence, marriage migration or another family-based purpose.
Verify: the exact relationship, sponsor or principal status, documents and whether you apply overseas or inside Korea.
Study or training
This route may fit a degree program, exchange study, language study or another recognized training program.
Verify: the school and program, admission documents, financial proof, correct D-2 or D-4 subtype and the Korean mission or immigration route handling your case.
Business, investment or intra-company activity
This route may fit an intra-company transfer, investment, technology startup, trade management or another business activity.
Verify: whether the real activity fits D-7, D-8, D-9 or another route, together with investment, corporate, office and applicant requirements.
Work or job seeking
This route may fit professional work, seasonal work, the Employment Permit System, job seeking, working holiday or another authorized employment activity.
Verify: the actual job duties, employer, qualifications, contract, recruitment system and whether permission is required before starting or changing work.
Registration, reporting and integration
You may already hold a status but need to handle an arrival procedure, report a change, understand a workplace-change route or register for an integration program.
Verify: which person has the duty, the exact event being reported, the available filing channel and the current deadline for that specific procedure.
A familiar visa name can still be the wrong route if the real activity, employer, school, relationship or application location does not match. Do not begin work, change activity or assume a status change is available solely because an article looks similar to your case.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Korean visa the same as a residence status?
People often use “visa” for both, but an entry visa and the status governing activities and stay in Korea are not always the same legal step. Confirm both the entry route and the status you need after arrival.
Can I change to my preferred status after entering Korea?
Do not assume so. In-country change availability depends on the current status, requested status, nationality, facts and current rules. Check the exact route before entering or making commitments.
Can I work while visiting, studying or waiting for another status?
Only when your current status and any required permission allow the specific activity. A job offer, application receipt or future plan does not automatically authorize work.
Where can I confirm an unusual case?
Use the Korea Visa Portal or the current HiKorea guidance. For case-specific immigration questions, contact 1345, the competent immigration office or the Korean embassy or consulate handling the application.
