Getting E-7-4 approved is a major milestone — but it’s also just the beginning. Your E-7-4 status opens doors that weren’t available on E-9: you can now bring your family to Korea, build toward long-term residency, and eventually qualify for permanent residency. But each of these steps has its own requirements, timelines, and documents.
This guide covers exactly what to do after your E-7-4 is approved — in the order you should do it.
📑 In this guide
1. Your First Steps After Approval
Once your E-7-4 status change is approved, do these things in order:
Collect your updated ARC
Visit the immigration office that processed your application with your passport and old ARC. Your new ARC will show E-7-4 status. Keep this card — you’ll need it for everything that follows.
Notify your employer of your new status
Your employer needs to update your employment records to reflect E-7-4 status. Ensure your payroll, insurance records, and employment certificate all reflect the new status going forward.
Apply for F-3 for family (if applicable)
If your spouse and/or children want to join you in Korea, the F-3 dependent visa application can begin immediately after your E-7-4 is issued. Don’t wait — processing takes time and your family shouldn’t remain separated longer than necessary.
Start or continue Korean language study
If you used the Korean language deferral, the 2-year clock started at approval. If you didn’t use the deferral, improving your Korean now directly helps your F-2-7 long-term residency score later.
2. Bringing Your Family: The F-3 Dependent Visa
E-7-4 holders are eligible to bring their spouse and unmarried minor children to Korea on the F-3 (Dependent / 동반) visa. This is one of the most significant rights that E-7-4 provides over E-9 status.
- Who can come: Spouse (배우자) + unmarried minor children (미성년 자녀)
- Condition: The spouse must be without another spouse (배우자가 없는 사람). This applies to the F-3 applicant, not the E-7-4 holder.
- Validity: Tied to the E-7-4 holder’s stay period — same duration as your visa
- Tuberculosis test: F-3 applicants must submit a tuberculosis certificate (결핵 진단서) per the relevant guidelines
F-3 Application Documents
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Integrated Application Form (통합신청서) | Filed by the family member applying for F-3 |
| Passport | Family member’s passport |
| Passport-size photo | Standard specification (4cm × 6cm, white background) |
| Application fee | Check current fee at HiKorea |
| Family relationship proof | Marriage certificate (for spouse) or birth certificate (for children). Foreign documents must be apostilled (for Hague Convention countries) or consularly verified (for non-member countries). Certified Korean translation required. |
| E-7-4 holder’s ARC | A copy of your updated E-7-4 ARC |
| Residence proof | Rental contract, property registration, or other residence documentation |
| Tuberculosis certificate | Per current tuberculosis screening guidelines |
3. Can Your Spouse Work in Korea?
The F-3 visa itself does not grant work rights. However, your spouse can apply for a separate work authorization (체류자격외 활동허가) to work in Korea. The official manual explicitly includes E-7-4 spouses in the eligible group.
| Work type | Fields allowed | Additional requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Professional work | E-1 through E-7 professional fields (excluding E-6-2 entertainment/hotel) | Must meet the qualification requirements of the target E-7 occupation. Separate work authorization application required. |
| Simple labor | Agriculture, forestry, livestock / Domestic care, childcare, nursing | Korean language required: TOPIK 2+ or KIIP Level 2+. Plus early adaptation program (조기적응프로그램) completion (currently waived until program is established). |
4. Renewing Your E-7-4
E-7-4 is indefinitely renewable as long as you maintain qualifying employment. Apply for renewal at least 30 days before your ARC expiry date — do not wait until the last day.
Renewal Documents
| # | Document | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ① | Application Form (통합신청서, 별지34호) + Passport + ARC | Download fresh form from HiKorea |
| ② | Employment contract | Current valid contract showing continued E-7-4 employment and salary ≥ KRW 26,000,000 |
| ③ | Income certificate (소득금액증명원 or 근로소득원천징수부) | Mandatory — this is the primary renewal verification document. Either the NTS certificate or company-issued withholding tax statement is accepted. |
| ④ | Business registration certificate copy | Confirm employer is still in good standing |
| ⑤ | Guarantee of Identity (신원보증서) | Required for E-7-4 / skilled labor occupations (S740, S610, S700) |
| ⑥ | Residence proof | Rental contract, utility bills, or other residence documentation |
| ⑦ | Employer tax certificates (납세증명서 + 지방세납세증명서) | Confirm employer has no outstanding tax delinquency |
5. Changing Employers on E-7-4
Unlike E-9, E-7-4 allows employer changes — but you must follow the formal notification process. Changing employers without notifying immigration is a violation of your visa conditions.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Process type | Workplace change notification (근무처변경허가) — requires immigration office approval |
| New employer requirements | Must meet all E-7-4 employer eligibility conditions: currently employing E-9/E-10/H-2 workers, no tax delinquency, within quota limits |
| Bonus point impact | Changing employers resets the “3+ years continuous service” bonus (-20 pts on K-Point). Factor this into your decision if you’re considering an F-2-7 application soon. |
| Key documents | New employment contract, new employer’s business registration and tax certificates, resignation documentation from previous employer (if applicable) |
6. The Road to Permanent Residency
E-7-4 opens a legitimate pathway to permanent residency in Korea — but it requires going through multiple steps over several years. Here’s the full roadmap:
E-7-4 Skilled Labor Status
Build your Korea work history, improve Korean language, accumulate savings and income. Focus on qualifying for F-2-7 point threshold. Minimum 1 year on E-7-4 before F-2-7 application is typically required.
F-2-7 Point-Based Long-Term Residency
Apply for F-2-7 once you accumulate enough points in the F-2-7 scoring system (minimum 80 points out of 135). E-7-4 holders apply through the general points system — not the professional worker fast-track. Key scoring categories: income, Korean language (KIIP especially valued), age, Korea work experience.
F-5 Permanent Residency
After maintaining F-2-7 for the required period (typically 3+ years) while meeting income and compliance requirements, you can apply for F-5 permanent residency. KIIP Level 5 completion waives the F-5 immigration interview and 종합평가 knowledge test.
7. F-2-7 Long-Term Residency: What E-7-4 Holders Need to Know
E-7-4 holders must apply for F-2-7 through the general points system (점수제 우수인재), which requires accumulating 80+ points across income, Korean language, age, and other categories.
F-2-7 General Points System — Key Categories for E-7-4 Holders
| Category | Max Points | Strategy for E-7-4 Holders |
|---|---|---|
| Age | 25 pts | 27–34 years old = maximum points. If you’re older, focus on other categories. |
| Korean language | Variable | KIIP Level 4+ or TOPIK 4+ earns maximum language points. KIIP Level 5 is practically essential for F-5 later. |
| Income level | Variable | Higher income relative to GNI = more points. Also determines F-2-7 validity period (1 year vs 3 years). |
| Korea work experience | Variable | Years worked in Korea under legal status contribute points. Your E-9 years also count. |
| Compliance | Variable | Clean immigration and tax record is essential — violations reduce points and can disqualify. |
8. F-5 Permanent Residency
The most relevant F-5 pathway for E-7-4 workers is the one available to those who have maintained F-2 (거주) status for a required period. The general pathway:
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Required prior status | F-2-7 (long-term residency) for 3+ years continuously |
| Income requirement | Typically 2× GNI or above at time of F-5 application |
| Korean language | KIIP Level 5 completion is the standard — waives the 종합평가 and immigration interview. TOPIK 3+ with separate 종합평가 test is an alternative. |
| Compliance record | Clean record throughout entire Korea stay — no significant immigration violations, no tax delinquency |
| Age requirement | Must be a legal adult (성년) under Korean civil law |
9. Full Timeline Overview
| Timeframe | Action | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 after approval | Collect updated ARC showing E-7-4 status | Immediate |
| Week 1–2 | Begin F-3 application for family (if applicable) | High |
| Month 1 | Enroll in KIIP (use TOPIK score to enter at highest possible level) | High |
| Month 1–6 (deferral users) | Pass TOPIK 2 or complete KIIP Level 2 — this unlocks F-3 | Critical if on deferral |
| Year 1–2 | Accumulate Korea work history, improve income and Korean level | Ongoing |
| Year 2–3 | Assess F-2-7 eligibility — calculate your F-2-7 point score | Plan ahead |
| Year 3+ | Apply for F-2-7 once points threshold is met (80+ pts) | Long-term |
| Before E-7-4 expiry | Renew E-7-4 at least 30 days before ARC expires | Mandatory |
| Year 6–8 (approx) | Apply for F-5 after maintaining F-2-7 for 3+ years | Long-term goal |
- E-7-4 opens F-3 family visas immediately — but not if you used the Korean language deferral
- Your spouse can apply for work authorization in professional or simple labor fields with a separate permit
- Renewal documents include the income certificate (소득금액증명원) — this is mandatory, not optional
- E-7-4 holders are excluded from the professional worker F-2-7 fast-track — use the general points system
- KIIP Level 5 is the most efficient path to F-5 — start as early as possible given demand
- The full E-7-4 → F-2-7 → F-5 journey typically takes 7–10 years total from first arrival in Korea
